Vicky Peláez is a Peruvian journalist and columnist, currently writing for The Moscow News and Sputnik. In June 2010, Peláez, her husband Mikhail Vasenkov, and eight others were arrested by the FBI for allegedly carrying out long-term, deep-cover assignments in the U.S. on behalf of Russia. All ten pleaded guilty the following month and were deported to Russia as part of a spy swap. The arrests, part of a multiyear FBI investigation called Operation Ghost Stories, inspired the TV show “The Americans.” According to Spy Sites of New York City, Peláez and Vasenkov had lived at “17 Clifton Avenue in Yonkers since 1985” and “commuted into New York City for their cover jobs.” Before moving to New York, Peláez “wrote columns critical of American policy for the left-leaning Spanish-language paper El Diario La Prensa.” Various news reports suggest that Peláez and Vasenkov moved back to Peru following their arrest and deportation. Vasenkov died on April 6 last year. In announcing his death, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service said “he created and headed an illegal residency, which obtained valuable political information, which was highly appreciated.”
