Pham Xuan An was a spy for the Viet Cong during the Vietnam war. The Communist Party recruited An and instructed him to choose a career in journalism as the best cover. Trained in the U.S., he returned to Vietnam to work for Time, Reuters and the New York Herald Tribune. An’s mission as a spy was to provide strategic intelligence reports about U.S. war plans. In "Perfect Spy: The Incredible Double Life of Pham Xuan An," Larry Berman writes that An “sought neither glory nor money for himself, but everything for the people of his homeland. He did not like being a spy. It was his national obligation.” In an interview with Berman, former Time bureau chief Frank McCulloch said “I now see An’s role was to listen, not plant stories. Therefore, the bureau office provided a perfect listening post for his other job because the political and military data was discussed openly.”
